The Eastern Mediterranean region provides significant information on glaciations and climates of the Quaternary. The aim of the study is to determine the distribution of glaciations, its cosmogenic surface exposure ages of glacial deposits exposed on Akdag (Southwestern Turkey). I also analyzed the present human activities in the region. Akdag (36.54 N, 29.57 E, 3016 m) is located at the southwest corner of Turkey, very close to the Mediterranean. During the field trips to the study area, 41 rock samples were collected from the moraine deposits in order to calculate the cosmogenic Cl-36 ages of the moraines in three glacier valleys. The moraines from where the samples were collected were at the altitudes between 2000-2200 meters above the sea level. The ages of moraines are in between 23.3±0.7 ka and 20.4±0.8 ka. Furthermore, pre-LGM glaciers were also determined for the first time in Turkish mountains. Their age results gave about 37.9 ka. Late Glacial moraine deposits were found to be 17.2 ka in the field of study. Dating results show consistency with the mountains in Turkey as well as in other parts of Europe.

Cosmogenic Radionuclides

Cosmogenic radionuclides are radioactive isotopes which are produced by natural processes and distributed within the Earth system. With a holistic view of the environment the authors show in this book how cosmogenic radionuclides can be used to trace and to reconstruct the history of a large variety of processes. They discuss the way in which cosmogenic radionuclides can assist in the quantification of complex processes in the present-day environment. The book aims to demonstrate to the reader the strength of analytic tools based on cosmogenic radionuclides, their contribution to almost any field of modern science, and how these tools may assist in the solution of many present and future problems that we face here on Earth. The book provides a comprehensive discussion of the basic principles behind the applications of cosmogenic (and other) radionuclides as environmental tracers and dating tools. The second section of the book discusses in some detail the production of radionuclides by cosmic radiation, their transport and distribution in the atmosphere and the hydrosphere, their storage in natural archives, and how they are measured. The third section of the book presents a number of examples selected to illustrate typical tracer and dating applications in a number of different spheres (atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, biosphere, solar physics and astronomy). At the same time the authors have outlined the limitations of the use of cosmogenic radionuclides.Written on a level understandable by graduate students without specialist skills in physics or mathematics, the book addresses a wide audience, ranging from archaeology, biophysics, and geophysics, to atmospheric physics, hydrology, astrophysics and space science.

This textbook provides a modern, quantitative and process-oriented approach to equip students with the tools to understand geomorphology. Insight into the interpretation of landscapes is developed from basic principles and simple models, and by stepping through the equations that capture the essence of the mechanics and chemistry of landscapes. Boxed worked examples and real-world applications bring the subject to life for students, allowing them to apply the theory to their own experience. The book covers cutting edge topics, including the revolutionary cosmogenic nuclide dating methods and modeling, highlights links to other Earth sciences through up-to-date summaries of current research, and illustrates the importance of geomorphology in understanding environmental changes. Setting up problems as a conservation of mass, ice, soil, or heat, this book arms students with tools to fully explore processes, understand landscapes, and to participate in this rapidly evolving field.

Karst Hydrogeology and Geomorphology is a fully revised and updated version of the extensively used and widely cited Karst Geomorphology and Hydrology published in 1989. This systems orientated book is based on the authors' own teaching, research, consulting and international experience and includes wide international citations and illustrations This edition features a stronger emphasis on karst hydrogeology, applied aspects of karst and practical problems of karst as well as computer modelling. New developments in the field such as ground penetrating radar, cosmogenic exposure age dating and mass spectrometer techniques are evaluated The book provides a comprehensive sequenced discussion covering the significant features of karst rocks, the chemistry and kinetics of their dissolution, regional dissolution and carbon sequestration rates as well as fundamentals of hydrogeology with emphasis on the distinctive triple porosity of karst aquifers, cavern genesis, modelling of karst aquifers, the nature and palaeo-environmental importance of cave deposits, karst landforms at the surface, palaeokarst, applied karst problems, sustainable management and conservation of karst resources. Karst Hydrogeology and Geomorphology is an invaluable reference for students of karst studies, karst geomorphology and groundwater hydrogeology as well as hydrogeologists, geomorphologists and civil engineers practicing in regions with karst rocks.
